"A landmark vehicle in American racing history"
From Edmunds Inside Line:
The 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport Roadster Chassis No. 002, a landmark vehicle in American racing history, will hit the auction block here on January 16.
Chevrolet built only five Grand Sports, which have been surrounded by an aura of intrigue. "Periodically, one of the five Grand Sports appeared, raced around at shocking speeds, and then plunged back into mysterious seclusion," in the words of journalist Brock Yates. Chassis No. 002 will be part of the lineup at the Automobiles of Arizona auction at the Arizona Biltmore Resort & Spa here.
Bidding requirements include a $2,000 cash deposit and a bank letter of guarantee, according to RM Auctions.
The Grand Sport up for auction "has been returned to its 1966 USRRC racing configuration," says RM Auctions, "wearing its pristine time-warp original bodywork with 427 power and accordingly remains just as it might have been seen over 40 years ago on the track or in the pits. It is the very definition of a 'time warp example,' especially considering that most race cars cannot make it through a season without new bodywork."
Goodies include a "comprehensive documentation package nearly six inches thick appropriate to its history, restoration and importance," said RM Auctions.
