The former NBA superstar returns for unique card offering
From the Chicago Sun-Times:
The NBA's favorite guard returns in some serious trading card action. Twenty-three autographed Michael Jordan trading cards will appear as inserts in the 2008-09 Fleer Basketball set being released Tuesday.
Upper Deck, which now owns Fleer, bought back 23 original cards to be randomly inserted in the Fleer collection. Each card is hand-signed by Jordan and is numbered. Cards represent Jordan's entire pro basketball career (including cards that feature the superstar wearing his comeback No. 45 jersey). The actual cards, not redemption cards, will be packed in the shipments. Jordan's signature appears in blue or silver ink.
Jordan also appears in a unique collectible with superstar athletes Muhammad Ali and Tiger Woods. The three are the subject of a triple-signed, limited-edition lithograph print titled, "Legends of Sports." The montage, which depicts each athlete in his element, is the first of its kind offered by Upped Deck.
"This is truly an incredible piece, as never before have these three sports legends signed [a piece of memorabilia] together," said Terry Melia, public relations manager for Upper Deck. "And unlike today's stock market, this beautiful montage will only appreciate over time."
On the piece, Ali is captured in his glory, showing off his famous float-like-a-butterfly, sting-like-a-bee stance, circa 1975; Jordan, suspended in air, looks to shoot as he sails toward the rim, and Woods strikes an intimidating figure with the follow-through of a drive.
A faint portrait image of each figure appears as part of the background. The autograph of each athlete appears under his image and is authenticated by Upper Deck.
The framed mixed-medium art print was produced on P-Velvet archival paper with hand-torn deckled edges and features a UV-resistant Plexiglas. The print, highlighted in gold, is 57 inches wide and 34 inches high. It is limited to 500 pieces. The cost is $6,000.
